Lama Jigme's
Tips on Meditation and the Spiritual Path
|
It’s relatively easy to train a doggie
to walk at the end of a leash…
but not so much with a kitty.
Try it!
You’ll see it’s like trying to drag a
running coleslaw shredder.
Likewise, you can NOT make someone
do the right thing.
No matter how much you desire someone,
you can not make them want you as well.
No matter how clearly you see
what must be done,
you can’t make some one respect you enough
to enthusiastically follow your advice.
No matter how much you love someone,
you can not make them
spontaneously, enthusiastically and habitually
refrain from sexually betraying you.
No matter how ardently you want
another to be happy,
you can not manipulate someone
into doing the right thing.
No matter how much you love someone,
you can not really stop them
from shooting themselves in the foot.
What then, are we to do?
Like Peppermint Patty seeing Charlie Brown pass her by
to kiss the little red headed girl, sometimes all we get to
do is watch.
Watching someone we care about,
ignore sound advice,
and enthusiastically harm themselves
can be like watching the film of a train wreck
in slow motion.
It’s horrible,
it’s disturbing,
it’s heart rending
but sometimes there is nothing you can do.
Do you like DVDs?
I love DVDs.
Sometimes I’ll watch romantic dramas.
The funny thing, is that no matter how ardently
I disagree with the protagonist’s choices
I really can’t influence them.
Let’s face it folks, the movie has already been:
• written,
• directed,
• filmed,
• edited,
• printed and
• distributed.
So any hope that I may have of changing things,
at the point that I’m watching it in my apartment,
are pretty much dashed.
But what about magick?
What about using {or abusing}
the tools of metaphysics
to make another do the right thing?
What a wonderful way to:
• drain one’s energy,
• waste time,
• disempower others and
• thoroughly squander one’s life!
That is precisely the type of foolishness that
I got caught up in during the early part of my
Tantric-Buddhist training.
I remember lamenting that my life was sh*t.
• I was sick,
• I was in dreadful pain,
• I was poor,
• my {then} wife was having problems at work,
• and both of us were having problems with our
respective families.
I remember trying to use Buddhist techniques
to somehow steer the course of people and events
in my life.
I complained that there was too much crap in my life.
I sincerely felt that I would not have the
time, energy or resources to
practice the Buddha’s teachings until I
some how modified or fixed the garbage in my life.
Oh how grateful I am that my kind teachers insisted that…
So, after we’ve seen what the right thing to do is.
And after we’ve gently and plainly asked:
• the apple of your eye to reciprocate,
• others to respect us enough to follow our advice,
• our lover to be true,
• our friends to do the right thing, and
• our dear ones to refrain from {metaphorically}
shooting themselves in the foot.
After we’ve done all that all we can do is sit back and
watch.
After MANY years of teaching
I can not help but conclude the following:
Although an individual may listen,
enamored, to my eloquence;
if they do NOT respect me enough to
apply my instructions and follow my advice…
then they are NOT a true student but merely,
just an audience member.
• if the apple of our eye won’t reciprocate, then
they’re not a sweetheart but merely an infatuation;
• if someone we love won’t be true, then they’re not a
twin-flame or a soul-mate but just a lover; and
• if one for whom we feel affection does not respect
us enough to consistently value and consider our
advice then they’re not really our friend but merely
an acquaintance.
Perhaps each of us should have the wherewithal to see,
really see, that respect does not grow.
It is either there or not.
And to realize that mutual respect is
mandatory for any:
• discipleship,
• romance or
• friendship to be
truly meaningful.
• love without mutual respect is just sex and
• friendship without mutual respect is just familiarity.
There we are, watching our students, lovers and friends
make bad decisions and shoot themselves in the foot
while often driving a stake through our heart
in the process.
If we’re really traversing Buddha’s path we’ll bring
that sorrow, fear and anger into the practices of
Awareness and Letting-go.
But how do we do that?
And furthermore, how will we use that
emotional fertilizer to harvest even greater,
concentration, love, wisdom, peace and happiness.?
That is exactly why I work with good-hearted and
spiritually ambitious students either over the phone or
in-person.
