Nothing can test a child’s degree of coolness like the first
day of school! When I entered the 5th grade class room,
for the first time, I was surprised to find that the teacher
had arranged the desks in a semi circle…
…because it was the 1970s and teacher was avant-
garde!
Once we were seated, each of my fellow students, and
myself received an 8 x 4 inch sheet of white construction
paper. We were to fold it in half length-wise so that is
could sit upright upon the edge of our desk like a tiny pup-
tent. Only we were asked to print our names on it so that
as we each surveyed our fellows, their names would be:
• easy to read,
• easy to learn.
And that’s what separated the…
While I {like the good little nerd I was} dutifully scrawled
my moniker upon the make-shift name plate, the cool kids
were carefully writing “Kiss Rules” in the exact font found
on their latest album.
My elitist step-father {God rest his soul} only played
classical music at home. Now I’m not going to say I was
therefore lacking in the cool department… but I had no
idea that they were talking about a rock band!
I actually thought they were announcing that there were
now specific…
To make matters worse, nobody was actually writing out
these romantic ordinances.
Hey, I had just discovered girls, and now I had to somehow
divine the rules for kissing them?
…for my little, 11 year old mind to handle!
As kids we could have honestly thought that coolness
was the key to happiness. But we were wrong, weren’t
