Essay Two:
Getting Guidance from the Great Compassionate One
Getting Guidance
from the Great Compassionate One
Ms. P. wrote:

…I'm having a terrible time with something
and hoping for some wisdom.

I try my best to get along with everyone. I really do.
But my brother's new 'girlfriend' gets up my nose.

My beloved brother is going through some really tough times.
Two weeks ago he tried to take his own life.
He's living with my family and myself now
and I am glad and grateful that his life is slowly returning to normal.

Last night this woman friend of his came over...
late at night...
her car broke down you see....
and had no money for a hotel or anything else.

I guess she expected me to put her up,
and that was impossible since our house is very tiny and have no room literally to spare.

She barges in, complaining, rude argumentative and obnoxious.
Everyone is smoking but myself
and i have chronic asthma
and so after about an hour or so of this,
i totally lose my temper and go outside.

My beloved husband came out and comforted me,
and I meditated on Chenrezig and Kwan Yin
to help me better understand
and be more compassionate.

I want to be compassionate,
but I don’t' want to be a pushover either.

I certainly don't wish to upset my brother
who has already been through way too much
and is finally returning to sanity.

I pray to find a middle path in this,
and I pray for patience and guidance
and to not be angry today.

Ms. P. also wrote:

…I said a lot of manis
to keep from throwing her bodily out of the house.

Dear Ms. P,

I am delighted that you recited many Mani’s
for the sound of “Om Mani Padme Hum”
falling from my student’s lips
is truly music to my ears!

Good, Ms. P, you done good.
Despite what you felt
you CHOSE compassion,
and that is good!

So often we forget that there is a vast difference
between what we feel and what we Choose,
between emotion and Volition,
between what we feel and what we Will.

But you, dear student remembered,
and I am delighted with you!

Ms. P. you brought up an excellent point when you asked
what is the compassionate thing to do?

That can be a mind-boggling question.
On one hand many of us needlessly harm ourselves
with the intention of being truly compassionate.

On the other hand, sometimes we rationalize
cruelty, selfishness and ruthlessness
with the phrases “Skillful-compassion,” or even “Tough-love.”

My Heart-teacher {Tsawai Lama} Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
taught that compassion has two aspects:
#1 compassionate Motivation and
#2 compassionate Action.

Having Chosen a compassionate intention
how then are we to know what
the most compassionate and most skillful and most insightful
course of action is?

Communication!
We must learn to communicate with the Great Compassionate One.
We must learn to communicate with  Chen-re-zig
so that we can ask Very Specific questions and receive “yes or no” answers.

I love that movie, “The Matrix”!
Did you see the “The Matrix”?

Forgive me if I merely paraphrase.

There is a wonderful scene where Morpheous is taking Neo to see the Oracle.
Neo is feeling some fear, and so, like many of us,
he falls back upon his controlling tendencies
by asking, “…is she {the Oracle} always right?”

Later in the movie, a very troubled Neo addresses Morpheous
saying, “…but the Oracle, she told me…”
at this point Morpheus interrupts and says,
“She told you exactly what you needed to hear.”

Is the Buddha of compassion all-loving enough,
all-powerful enough, all-knowing enough and all-present enough
to dynamically guide you
upon Buddha’s path to enlightenment?

Do you have the courage to rely upon  Chen-re-zig’s  advice,
even when you don’t agree with it?
Do you have the courage to rely upon  Chen-re-zig’s  advice,
even when you don’t understand it?

Do you have the courage to rely upon  Chen-re-zig’s  advice,
even when you are frightened or confused?
If you do, then perhaps I can help you to accomplish this ability
to receive guidance from the Great Compassionate One.

It is simple.
You could start off with a brief, Three page practice text.
You could arrange to call at a predetermined time to receive
the Empowerment, Transmission and Explanation of the Practice.

And then you could practice.
You could practice five minuets, twice daily.

When you feel comfortable
you could receive the Nine page practice text,
and after receiving it’s Empowerment, Transmission and Explanation;
practice eight minuets, twice daily.

Some accomplish communication with the Great Compassionate One
in two days,
for some it takes two months
and for others two years.

Ms. P, when you desire to accomplish this communication with  Chen-re-zig
I invite you to write me to ask for the first text and telephone session.
Until then, the decision is yours;
I leave it to you.

May you be healthy, wealthy and happy,
may you practice skillfully and joyfully,
may you accomplish  Chen-re-zig  in THIS life
and then help many others do likewise…

for truly that is the meaning of life!
